We Were on a Podcast! Episode 126: Brain Science, Trauma, and Rethinking School Behavior
We’re beyond excited to share that we had the opportunity to be featured on Episode 126 of Schurtz and Ties: A Podcast About Education and Culture! It was such an energizing conversation with hosts Kasey Schurtz and Brian Miller—two thoughtful, curious, and deeply supportive presenters and educators.
In this episode, we dove into how brain science and stress intersect with education and school behavior, grounding the discussion in research from Dr. Bruce D. Perry and the Neurosequential Model. We unpacked why traditional discipline systems often miss the mark, and explored how brain-based approaches can transform learning environments. Some of the insights we loved sharing (and hearing!) included:
- Regulation and felt safety are critical prerequisites for learning—students can’t access as much of their higher-order thinking or relational skills if they’re stuck in survival mode.
- Behavior is communication, and when we understand what’s happening to ourselves and others internally, our responses become more compassionate and effective.
- Small shifts—environmental, relational, and routine-based—can make a huge difference in both student outcomes and adult well-being.
If you’re passionate about education, brain science, or just curious about what it takes to cultivate safe, supportive school cultures, give it a listen- any episodes! You’ll walk away with a richer understanding of behavior, connection, and what it means to meet the needs of all learners.
